Starkey Omega AI Hearing Aid: Full Feature Review From Liverpool Hearing Centre
Starkey released Omega AI in October 2025, and after fitting these devices to patients at Liverpool Hearing Centre, we can confidently say this is the most complete hearing aid Starkey has ever produced. That is not a statement we make lightly - Starkey's previous Edge AI was already very good.
What makes Omega AI genuinely different is DNN 360 - the first deep neural network-powered directionality system built into a hearing aid, exclusive to the premium 24 technology tier. Traditional directional microphones focus on sound coming from in front of you. DNN 360 analyses your entire acoustic environment in real time, distinguishing speech from background noise across all 360 degrees. In practical terms, this means you can follow a conversation at a busy Liverpool restaurant without constantly repositioning yourself to face the speaker.
The G3 Neuro Processor and DNN 360: How Omega AI Actually Hears
At the heart of Omega AI sits the new G3 Gen AI Neuro Processor. This chip is significantly faster than the G2 processor used in Edge AI, with improved processing efficiency that allows DNN 360 to run continuously without compromising battery life. Speed matters here because the processor needs to make real-time decisions about what you want to hear and what you do not.
DNN 360 is the feature that separates Omega AI from everything else currently available. Unlike traditional directional microphones that apply fixed patterns - essentially pointing a beam at whoever is in front of you - DNN 360 uses a trained neural network to continuously classify sounds across your entire environment. It identifies speech, separates it from noise, locates the direction of each source, and adjusts accordingly. It is important to note that DNN 360 is exclusive to the Omega AI 24 tier - the 20 and 16 tiers use Adaptive Directionality instead.
According to Starkey's published research (Marquardt et al., 2025), DNN 360 delivers a 19.6% average improvement in speech intelligibility compared to older directional systems, with up to 28% median improvement in certain scenarios. When the Binaural Spatial Adaptation mode is activated (available in the 24 tier only and requiring manual activation in Pro Fit), users can experience up to an 8 dB signal-to-noise ratio advantage for transient speech from behind and beside. Independent testing from HearAdvisor awarded Omega AI a Tuned SoundScore of 4.6 out of 5, placing it in the top 15% of all hearing aids tested to date.
What does this mean in practice? If you are sitting at a family dinner and someone behind you says your name, you will hear it clearly - without losing the conversation happening in front of you. This was a genuine limitation of previous directional systems, and DNN 360 addresses it directly.
DNN 360 vs Traditional Directionality
| Feature | Traditional Directionality | DNN 360 (Omega AI 24) |
|---|---|---|
| Sound focus | Fixed beam - typically forward-facing | Adaptive 360-degree analysis using neural network |
| Speech detection | Relies on microphone positioning | Classifies speech vs noise across all directions |
| Spatial awareness | Reduced awareness of sounds behind/beside | Maintains natural spatial awareness while enhancing speech |
| Response time | Reactive - waits for noise changes | Predictive - anticipates what you need to hear |
| Speech-in-noise improvement | Moderate | Up to 28% better intelligibility (19.6% average), up to 8 dB SNR gain via Binaural Spatial Adaptation |
Edge Mode+: On-Demand Clarity When You Need It Most
Even with DNN 360 running continuously, some listening situations call for extra help. Edge Mode+ is Starkey's on-demand feature that re-analyses your environment in real time and temporarily applies stronger noise reduction, directionality, and compression settings. Think of it as a turbo button for conversation clarity.
Activate Edge Mode+ with a tap on the hearing aid itself or through the My Starkey app. It works particularly well in unexpectedly noisy situations - walking into a packed Bold Street cafe, for example, or arriving at a busy family gathering. The feature was already excellent in Edge AI, and Starkey has kept it unchanged in Omega AI because it did not need fixing.
If you deal with tinnitus alongside hearing loss, Edge Mode+ provides an additional layer of control over your listening environment that many of our patients find genuinely helpful in reducing listening fatigue.
Design, Comfort, and Available Styles
Omega AI is available in seven main styles, covering everything from mild to profound hearing loss. The Omega AI 24 tier features DNN 360 processing, while the 20 and 16 tiers use Adaptive Directionality. The smallest custom option (CIC) trades Bluetooth connectivity for maximum discretion.
| Style | Battery | Battery Life | Bluetooth | Telecoil | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RIC RT | Rechargeable Li-ion | Up to 51 hours | Yes (LE Audio) | Yes | Maximum battery life; venue loop users |
| mRIC R | Rechargeable Li-ion | Up to 41 hours | Yes (LE Audio) | No | Most popular - discretion and comfort |
| RIC 312 | Disposable (size 312) | 5-7 days | Yes (LE Audio) | Yes | Those preferring traditional batteries; CROS compatible |
| ITE R | Rechargeable Li-ion | Up to 42 hours | Yes (LE Audio) | No | Easy physical controls; more severe hearing loss |
| ITC R | Rechargeable Li-ion | Up to 42 hours | Yes (LE Audio) | No | Discreet custom fit with rechargeable convenience |
| CIC | Disposable (size 312) | 7-8 days | No | No | Maximum invisibility; glasses wearers |
Physically, Omega AI looks virtually identical to Edge AI. The mRIC R remains the most popular style - it sits discreetly behind the ear with a thin wire connecting to a small receiver in the ear canal. Most people will not notice you are wearing it. If you want something even less visible, the CIC fits deep inside the ear canal and is genuinely difficult to spot, even at close range. For patients interested in invisible hearing aid options, both the CIC and ITC are worth considering.
Comfort is excellent across all styles. The RIC models use silicone domes or custom moulds that most patients forget about within a few days. Updated venting in Omega AI reduces the occluded "blocked" sensation that cheaper hearing aids can produce, so your own voice sounds natural.
Battery Life: Setting a New Standard
Battery life has long been a Starkey strength, and Omega AI maintains that advantage. The RIC RT model delivers up to 51 hours on a single charge - that is comfortably more than two full days, even with regular streaming. The smaller mRIC R manages up to 41 hours, which still exceeds a very full day of use with streaming.
The StarLink Charger 2.0 fully charges the aids in approximately 3.5 hours. A quick 10-minute turbo charge provides around 3 hours of use when the battery is low - useful if you forgot to charge overnight and need to get out the door.
For patients who prefer not to deal with chargers at all, the RIC 312 model uses traditional disposable batteries (size 312) that last approximately 5-7 days. This can be a sensible choice for frequent travellers or anyone who simply prefers the flexibility of carrying spare batteries.
Importantly, Starkey achieved these battery figures without sacrificing DNN 360 performance. The G3 processor is more power-efficient than its predecessor, allowing the advanced neural network processing to run continuously throughout the day.
Durability: Built for Real Life
Starkey has taken durability seriously with Omega AI. The new Pro10 HydraShield waterproof coating is tested to last 10 times longer than the previous Pro 8 coating used on Edge AI. All models carry an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, meaning they are protected against submersion up to 1 metre.
For custom models (ITE, ITC, CIC), Starkey has introduced a new shell resin that is 20 times stronger than previous acrylic materials. These shells also have some flex, making them significantly more resistant to cracking from accidental drops or impacts. This is a meaningful upgrade for anyone who has ever experienced the frustration of a cracked hearing aid shell.
In practical terms, Omega AI handles sweat, rain, humidity, and the general unpredictability of British weather without concern. You do not need to remove them for a light shower (though we would not recommend swimming with them), and gym sessions are absolutely fine.
Smart Features: The My Starkey App and TeleHear AI
The My Starkey app serves as your control centre for Omega AI. From your smartphone or Apple Watch, you can adjust volume, switch listening programmes, customise sound settings for different environments, and access all health tracking data.
TeleHear AI: Your Pocket Audiologist
TeleHear AI is one of the most interesting features in Omega AI. It uses generative AI technology to help resolve common sound concerns without requiring a clinic visit. Describe your issue using your voice - "Speech sounds muffled in meetings" or "Background noise is too loud in restaurants" - and TeleHear AI creates an instant sound adjustment with 93% predictive accuracy, based on thousands of professional fittings.
You can try the adjustment, apply it if you like it, or revert to your original settings at any time. It does not replace professional fitting and fine-tuning - and we would always recommend periodic check-ups - but it is remarkably useful for those moments between appointments when something is not quite right.
Gen AI Smart Assistant
The Gen AI Smart Assistant allows you to interact with your hearing aids using natural conversational language. Ask it questions about your hearing aids, request programme changes, set medication or appointment reminders (which play directly through your hearing aids), or check battery status - all hands-free. Think of it as a smart assistant built specifically for hearing aid management.
LED Indicator Lights and Find My Hearing Aid
A small but genuinely useful addition: green and red LED indicator lights on the RIC RT and mRIC R models confirm power status and Bluetooth connectivity at a glance. Even better, these LEDs double as a Find My Hearing Aid tool through the My Starkey app - activate the lights to flash, making it easy to locate a misplaced device even in the dark. Anyone who has ever spent twenty minutes searching for a hearing aid that fell behind a cushion will appreciate this feature enormously.
Health and Wellness Tracking
Omega AI positions hearing aids as broader health monitoring devices. The suite of wellness features includes:
- Respiratory rate monitoring - An industry first. Omega AI automatically tracks your breathing rate in the background throughout the day. Respiratory rate is one of the four vital signs, and this data feeds into weekly wellness summaries without affecting battery performance.
- Balance Builder - Guided at-home exercises designed to improve stability and coordination. Since balance and hearing are connected through the inner ear, this is a practical feature for reducing fall risk.
- Fall detection - If a fall is detected, the system can alert designated contacts with your location. This provides a meaningful safety net, particularly for those who live alone.
- Step and activity tracking - Monitors daily movement, social engagement time, and cognitive activity.
- Weekly wellness reports - A summary of hearing aid usage, activity levels, and health metrics delivered through the app.
These features do not replace dedicated health monitoring devices, but they add genuine value to something you are already wearing every day. Several of our patients have found the balance exercises particularly helpful, and the fall detection provides peace of mind for family members. Research continues to demonstrate the link between hearing loss and dementia, and features that encourage overall cognitive and physical wellness support that broader health picture.
Connectivity: Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast
Omega AI uses Bluetooth LE Audio - the latest connectivity standard - for streaming calls, music, and audio from compatible devices. This provides faster pairing, lower power consumption, and more stable connections compared to older Bluetooth protocols. Compatible devices include iPhones (11 and newer), most modern Android phones, and Windows 11+ computers.
Omega AI is also Auracast-ready. Auracast is a new broadcast audio standard that will eventually allow hearing aids to receive audio directly from public address systems in cinemas, airports, places of worship, and other venues. As of early 2026, Auracast-enabled venues are still relatively rare in the UK, but the technology is already functional in Omega AI. The RIC RT model also includes a traditional telecoil, ensuring compatibility with existing hearing loop systems found in many UK theatres, churches, and public buildings.
For television, the StarLink Edge TV Streamer sends audio directly from your TV to your hearing aids. Streaming now starts and reconnects automatically - a welcome improvement over previous models that occasionally required manual reconnection. As more televisions incorporate Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast natively, the need for a separate streamer will diminish, but for now, the accessory remains necessary for most setups.
Hands-free calling works natively on compatible iPhones. For Android users, calls stream to the hearing aids with standard Bluetooth audio routing. Google Fast Pair (added in a January 2026 firmware update) makes Android pairing essentially automatic.
Tinnitus Management
Omega AI includes Starkey's MultiFlex Tinnitus Pro technology with customisable sound therapy across up to 24 frequency bands. Your audiologist can programme a tinnitus masking signal tailored precisely to your personal tinnitus profile. Omega AI also introduces new adaptive nature-sound programmes not available in previous Starkey models, providing additional relief options.
The companion Relax app allows you to create customised relief sounds coupled with calming visuals, which can be particularly helpful at bedtime when tinnitus tends to be most noticeable. For a comprehensive approach to tinnitus treatment, combining Omega AI's built-in sound therapy with structured clinical support produces the best outcomes.
Sound Quality and Real-World Performance
Independent testing from HearingTracker places Omega AI in the top 15% of all hearing aids tested, with measurable improvements over Edge AI in speech-in-noise performance. In the HearAdvisor sound lab, the Tuned SoundScore came in at 4.6 out of 5, earning a 2025 Expert Choice Award. The overall HearingTracker Score was 4.4 out of 5.
In our own clinical experience fitting Omega AI at Liverpool Hearing Centre, the most consistent feedback from patients has been improved comfort in group conversation settings. The combination of DNN 360 and Edge Mode+ means patients report less listening fatigue over the course of a day - they are not straining as hard to follow conversation, which makes a real difference by evening.
Music streaming quality is decent but not exceptional. If you are an audiophile, dedicated earbuds or headphones will always outperform hearing aids for pure music enjoyment. However, for casual listening - podcasts, audiobooks, phone calls - the streaming quality through Omega AI is perfectly good and the convenience of not switching devices is valued by most users.
One note worth mentioning: the Consonant Brightness feature, which adjusts compression speed for certain speech sounds, may not suit everyone. If you notice an unusual static-like quality between words, ask your audiologist to review this setting. It is easily adjusted and resolves quickly once identified.

The honest assessment: if you are currently wearing Edge AI and are happy with the performance, the upgrade to Omega AI offers meaningful but incremental improvements - primarily in durability, with the most significant upgrade - DNN 360 directionality - exclusive to the 24 technology level. If you are wearing Genesis AI or an older model, Omega AI represents a more substantial step forward across the board.
For first-time hearing aid users or those switching from another manufacturer, Omega AI is one of the strongest options on the market in 2026.
Who Benefits Most From Omega AI?
Not every hearing aid suits every person. Based on our fitting experience, Omega AI is particularly well-suited to:
- People who spend significant time in noisy environments - restaurants, social gatherings, busy workplaces, Liverpool city centre. DNN 360 (at the 24 tier) is specifically designed for these situations.
- Active individuals who value durability - the Pro10 HydraShield coating and strengthened shell materials mean fewer worries about moisture, sweat, or accidental knocks.
- Tech-comfortable users who want app control - the My Starkey app, TeleHear AI, and health tracking features add considerable value for those willing to use them.
- Anyone with tinnitus alongside hearing loss - the MultiFlex Tinnitus Pro with nature-sound programmes provides flexible relief options.
- People concerned about cognitive and physical wellness - the health tracking suite (fall detection, balance exercises, respiratory monitoring) adds practical safety features.
- Those with mild to severe hearing loss - the range of styles and three technology tiers means Omega AI can be configured for most hearing profiles.
Omega AI may be less suited to individuals who want a completely simple hearing aid without smartphone involvement, though even the CIC model works well as a straightforward amplification device without app dependency.
Potential Drawbacks and Honest Considerations
No hearing aid is perfect, and transparency matters. Here are the things to consider:
- Feature complexity - Some patients feel overwhelmed by the number of features. If you want something you simply put in and forget about, the full feature set may feel excessive. That said, you can use as many or as few features as you like - the core hearing performance works beautifully without ever opening the app.
- Smartphone dependency for full functionality - TeleHear AI, the Gen AI Smart Assistant, health tracking, and most customisation features require a compatible smartphone. The CIC model does not have Bluetooth at all.
- Premium pricing - Omega AI sits at the top of Starkey's range. The technology is impressive, but it represents a significant investment. For patients with straightforward hearing needs in quieter environments, a mid-range option may deliver excellent results at a lower cost. We always discuss the full range of options during a comprehensive hearing assessment.
- Music streaming quality - While perfectly adequate for calls, podcasts, and casual listening, music quality through Omega AI does not match dedicated audio earbuds. This is a limitation shared by virtually all hearing aids on the market.
- Bluetooth LE Audio compatibility - Not all smartphones fully support Bluetooth LE Audio yet. Check your phone's specifications before assuming all features will work. Starkey's compatibility list has had some inaccuracies, so we recommend verifying independently.
- Rapid product cycles - Starkey releases new platforms more frequently than most manufacturers (annually vs the industry standard of 18-24 months). This is good for innovation but can feel frustrating if you purchased Edge AI recently.
- DNN 360 is tier-dependent - The headline directionality feature is only available in the premium 24 tier. The 20 and 16 tiers use Adaptive Directionality, which is still very capable but does not offer the same neural network-powered spatial processing.
Three Technology Tiers: Choosing the Right Level
Omega AI is available in three technology tiers - 24, 20, and 16. All three share the same G3 Neuro Processor, but DNN 360 is exclusive to the 24 tier. The 20 and 16 tiers use Adaptive Directionality instead:
- Omega AI 24 (Premium) - Full DNN 360 directionality (exclusive to this tier) with maximum channels and bands, all health features, Gen AI Smart Assistant, Binaural Spatial Adaptation, Push to Talk, and the best speech-in-noise performance. Best for complex listening environments and active lifestyles.
- Omega AI 20 (Advanced) - Adaptive Directionality with slightly fewer processing channels. Excellent for most everyday situations. A good balance of technology and value.
- Omega AI 16 (Essential) - Entry-level Omega AI with Adaptive Directionality, reliable battery life, and modern connectivity. Ideal for day-to-day use in moderate listening environments.
At Liverpool Hearing Centre, we help you determine which tier matches your lifestyle, listening demands, and budget during your initial assessment. There is no point paying for features you will not use - equally, underspending on technology if you regularly face challenging listening environments can leave you disappointed.
Liverpool Hearing Centre's Fitting Approach
As independent audiologists, we fit hearing aids from every major manufacturer. We are not tied to Starkey or any other brand, which means our recommendation is based solely on what will work best for your specific hearing loss, lifestyle, and preferences.
Our fitting process for Omega AI includes:

Frequently Asked Questions About Starkey Omega AI
Is Starkey Omega AI worth the upgrade from Edge AI?
The upgrade is most worthwhile if you frequently find yourself in challenging listening environments - noisy restaurants, group conversations, busy social settings. DNN 360, available in the premium 24 tier, provides measurable improvements in speech clarity from all directions, and the enhanced durability (Pro10 HydraShield, stronger custom shells) adds long-term value across all tiers. If your Edge AI is working well in mostly quiet-to-moderate environments, the improvements may feel incremental. We recommend trying Omega AI during a demonstration appointment so you can judge the difference for yourself in our clinic before committing.
How does Omega AI compare to hearing aids from Phonak, Oticon, and Signia?
Each manufacturer has different strengths. Starkey's DNN 360 is currently unique in its approach to neural network-powered directionality. Phonak's Infinio platform excels with its deep learning-based noise reduction. Oticon's Intent uses motion and intention sensors to adjust processing. Signia's IX platform focuses on split processing for own-voice naturalness. The best choice depends on your specific hearing loss profile, lifestyle priorities, and personal sound preference. As independent audiologists, we fit all major brands and can help you compare options directly during a consultation.
Will Omega AI work with my smartphone?
Omega AI uses Bluetooth LE Audio and is compatible with iPhone 11 and newer (iOS 15+), most modern Android devices (Google Pixel 7+, Samsung Galaxy S21+ and newer with LE Audio support), and Windows 11+ computers. Full Bluetooth LE Audio functionality - including all streaming features - requires your device to support this standard. Some older Android phones may connect for basic audio streaming but lack full feature access. We can check your specific phone compatibility during your appointment. Google Fast Pair (added January 2026) makes Android pairing nearly automatic.
Can Omega AI help with tinnitus?
Yes. Omega AI includes MultiFlex Tinnitus Pro, which offers customisable sound therapy across up to 24 frequency bands. Your audiologist can programme a masking signal matched precisely to your tinnitus profile. The platform also includes new adaptive nature-sound programmes unique to Omega AI. The companion Relax app provides additional relief sounds with calming visuals. For comprehensive tinnitus management, we recommend combining Omega AI's built-in therapy with structured clinical support - you can learn more about our approach on our tinnitus treatment page.
How long does the battery last on Starkey Omega AI?
Battery life depends on the model. The larger RIC RT delivers up to 51 hours per charge (over two full days). The popular mRIC R provides up to 41 hours. Custom ITE and ITC models offer up to 42 hours. All rechargeable models fully charge in approximately 3.5 hours using the StarLink Charger 2.0, with a 10-minute turbo charge providing around 3 hours of emergency use. The CIC model uses disposable size 312 batteries lasting approximately 7-8 days. Streaming audio and using health tracking features will reduce these figures somewhat, but even with heavy streaming, most users get comfortably through a full day.
Is Omega AI waterproof?
Omega AI carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and features the new Pro10 HydraShield coating, tested to last 10 times longer than the previous waterproof treatment. This means reliable protection against rain, sweat, humidity, and accidental splashes. The hearing aids are rated for submersion up to 1 metre, so they will survive an accidental drop in water. However, we would not recommend intentional swimming or showering with them. For anyone active in the gym, running outdoors, or simply living in the North West of England, the moisture protection is more than adequate.
Does Liverpool Hearing Centre offer a free trial of Omega AI?
Yes. We offer a trial period so you can experience Omega AI in your everyday environments before making a final decision. This means wearing the hearing aids at home, at work, in restaurants, and wherever else you spend your time - giving you a realistic sense of how the technology performs for your specific needs. Your trial includes full professional programming using real-ear measurement, app setup, and follow-up support. To arrange your trial, call us on 0151 676 9608 or book online.
What level of hearing loss can Omega AI treat?
Omega AI RIC models are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. Custom ITE and ITC models accommodate mild to moderately-severe loss. The CIC fits mild to moderate loss. For profound hearing loss, Starkey recommends a high-powered BTE or custom ITE style with appropriate receiver power. During your comprehensive hearing assessment at Liverpool Hearing Centre, we establish the exact nature and degree of your hearing loss and recommend the most appropriate style and technology level accordingly.
What is the difference between DNN 360 and Adaptive Directionality?
DNN 360 is Starkey's neural network-powered directional system, exclusive to the Omega AI 24 tier. It uses a trained deep neural network to continuously classify and separate speech from noise across all 360 degrees, delivering up to 28% better speech intelligibility in certain scenarios. The 20 and 16 tiers use Adaptive Directionality - a capable system that adjusts microphone focus based on your environment, but without the neural network processing. For patients who regularly face complex listening situations such as busy restaurants or group conversations, the 24 tier's DNN 360 offers a noticeable advantage. For those in mostly moderate listening environments, Adaptive Directionality performs well for everyday use.
